because its connected to the main sewer...the reason you have a vent pipe is just that ...it has nothing to with gases of any kind ....if you did not have a vent ..when you flushed the toilet the vacuum it creates would pull the water out of the u bends in your wash hand basins etc ..and then you would get smells ...you don't have to have a soil pipe as you buy an air emitting valve ..called a durgo valve ...and as the syphon action of the toilet starts the valve is pulled open and air is sucked in ..as the flow of water stops ..the valve closes

Because the soil pipe is a venting system for the sewers. If there was no vent system the gasses built up which includes the gas Methane could become explosive. That is why the soil pipe terminates at the eaves level of a roof. If it was shorter the escaping smell would be swept downwards by downdrafts from the roof.

Sir - it seems you are not using your "soil pipe" correctly. after each use, water is used in which to flush the waste away. The owner's manual from your particular brand of "soil pipe" should show you how to do this. i know not using water in the "soil pipe" saves one much money, but the lack of it leads to unsanitary conditions not to mention the strange smell emulating from it. Back in roman times when plumbing was first invented, this was advertised as "Pipe the sh** right out of your house". This phrase also has a double meaning to it - but it's up to the reader to figure it out. Best Regards, Y
