My therapist advertises for doing hypnosis and when I am in session sometimes I feel like I'm 'under the influence' of hypnosis. How can I do a self-test to know? and is there a way to snap out of it on my own? He always tells me to look in the mirror at the end to say I'm beautiful but I don't know if that has to do with snapping out of it?

I think that as long as someone isn't actively resisting hypnosis, such as they are not aware it is being conducted, then they are fair game. They don't have to literally be told and then consent to it. In fact that can make the process less successful since the person may on some level resist it though it is of course ethical to disclose what is being conducted to the patient. I know he is hynotising me, my behavior is not normal, and neither or the things I say and feel, I am certain I am under hynosis. My question is, during my session is there something I can tell myself to do during the session that will be a sure thing to snap me out of it as long as I remember to do it during the session?

I don't think it's that easy to hypnotize someone without their consent (and I don't know of any such test for hypnosis). Is your therapist doing anything in particular to influence you in this way? Any responsible therapist would be upfront about whatever techniques they use and would seek your permission to use them. Irresponsible and even predatory people can be therapists, so it's important to deal with boundary crossings like this.

Trust your instinct here. If it feels weird, or like something is happening that you didn't ask for and you don't like, then either leave or discuss it with your therapist if you feel safe to do that.

If you're familiar with hypnosis, then you've no doubt heard of Master Hypnotist Steve G. Jones. His book, "Ultimate Conversational Hypnosis" has been voted as the best hypnosis course ever made. The book is also available in electronic format at: http://www.hypnosistocontrol.net

If you want to get an edge in everyday communication and lead other people towards your goals this is a must read.

Hello Sunrise

A lot of people are rather disappointed at how they feel during hypnosis.

It is a normal state, you can feel very alert & focused, you can slip into sleep, you can feel light & detatched, you can even feel absolutely as you normally do.

Sometimes your limbs, eyelids etc will be heavy, hard to life - but on times they won't be - so as a self test this may not work. If you are in session with a therapist then he will be doing such tests - so relax, trust your therapist.

As a hypnothrapist I looking in the mirror & stating that you are beautiful is a positive suggestion to yourself & not an awakener.

If you are left in hypnosis you will naturally come round in about 10 - 15 mins unless you fall asleep.

Hypnosis is more of a state where you don't care. For the most part, you are aware of what you are doing, but you really don't care.

Imagine it like sleeping, but when someone tells you to do something, you do it.

Of course since in sleep, your subconscious mind is still active, you won't do stuff like commit suicide, jump off a building, strip, etc.

So theoretically, you can't tell. (cause there's no such thing as lucid hypnosis that I am aware of) Also because if you knew, then you wouldn't be hypnotized, because while hypnotized, your conscious mind is kinda asleep.

The whole thing about hypnosis that that you have to WANT to be hypnotized.

If you mind doesn't want to be hypnotized, it can't be. If your mind wants you to wake from hypnosis, you will.

If you're trying to be hypnotized, its a relaxed state. You are completely aware of what is happening. You just don't necessarily care.

Any hypnotist should give a brief overview of hypnosis with his/her audience/patient. They tell you exactly how it works (along the lines of what I have just said). Usually, they need to say these things in order to protect themselves against lawsuits.
