The on board computer says it has a faulty EGR valve, which was serviced. The check light turned on few days later after a hard acceleration (up to 4000-5000rpm). What can be wrong with the car?

There are many causes of poor fuel mileage the cheapest to fix is driving habits. A lead foot can waste a lot of fuel. Check your air filter, have a tune up, replace o2 sensor(s) would be my next steps. Get that check engine light diagnosed at a shop.

Just because it was serviced doesn't mean your EGR isn't malfunctioning.

If your oxygen sensor or any of the electronic components are reading the fuel-intake values wrong, you're gonna get crappy mileage.

I'd take it back to the mechanic (or probably opt for someone else) and make sure they do a complete analysis. This is especially true if you've added a gas additive or gasline anti-freeze anytime lately.

Also, everybody (EVERYBODY!) needs to check their tire pressure every month. Low tire pressure can add 10-15% to your gas usage alone. Make sure it's at the maximum pressure for your car, not just the "recommended" readings you'll find imprinted on the tire.

On board computer never going to tell you that EGR valve faulty.Code will point you to check EGR system.EGR valve was serviced???HOW????Somebody pull your leg, buddy.Took your money, didn't fix the real problem.Sound to me like...."Yes,I've changed your blinker fluid".
And YES,EGR system would rise your fuel consumption if there lock or no flow in EGR system.Smart and honest mechanic will tell you, that you need clean you EGR passages to the intake manifold and check other system components for proper operation. That why your ck. eng. light come back again, because problem still there.Good luck.

check gas cap it needs to be on tight, also
A dirty air filter can also cause problems, they are cheap ~$10 and you can probably do it yourself, if you don't know the last time it was changed, its time to change it. Also regular mantaince is important on newer cars, next to check is spark plugs and oil change. your owners manual tells you specific times to change these items and follow it, (everyone falls under the severe usage in the owners manual) check your temperature / other gauges and they should be about half/normal/ take it to a shop for an estimate

ps an autozone will check your check engine light for free and tell you exactly why the light is on and then you can take it to the shop to be serviced(or to get a refund if its the same problem as before)
