What you saw was a meteor. "Shooting star" is a incorrect name for "meteor," dating from centuries ago when we didn't know what they were.
I've seen hundreds of meteors in fifty years of looking at the sky, and they always take me by surprise and fill me with delight. You should be able to see many more in the next week or so, as we head into the second biggest meteor shower of the year, the Geminids on December 13 and 14.
I live in Canada.

The Perseids are an annual shower of shooting stars in mid-August. I went out to see them one year. One sees a lot each hour when the sky is clear. Yes, it was awesome. :)
Also, I've spent 5 weeks total on the beach on Grand Cayman the past 3 years. There is VERY little light pollution -- e.g., the Milky Way is completely visible. And I've seen at least one shooting star there.
And I saw one off a cruise ship once, despite only having cruised for 10 days or so total in the past 30 years.
I think they're actually pretty common in areas with clear, dark skies.

You might have seen a fireball, which is a very bright meteor. In a week, a meteor shower called the Geminids will peak. Get out to a dark spot in the countryside and you'll see up to 80 shooting stars an hour. They are bright and fast and will appear to come from a spot between the bright stars Castor and Pollux in northern Gemini, the Twins. If you watch the sky as often as some of us do, you'll be seeing meteors every night.

Seen a million throughout the years. I have also seen many during times when there was not a meteor shower happening. Go on to wikipedia and look for meteor showers. They occur at the same time every year and they can actually tell you in which direction of the sky to look to see them.

Yes, have seen quite a few. Saw one most recently in October during the Orionids. Very bright, long trail.
Was amazed to learn that most of these are caused by pieces of material the size of a dust speck.

Lots of people have seen them, myself included, many times. As for what country I'm from, that would be the United States. My humble apologies for the current occupant of the White House, but I didn't vote for him.
