They can especially if they are rooted in worthlessness. Loss of a relationship, job, loved one, all those can make us devalue ourself and feel very abadoned. The worst abadonment of all is the abadonment of self.
When you no longer care for self, then the urge to self abuse is hieghtened.

Abandonment can trigger it. In young adults and older where the self-abuse has become habit it is usually it is more of a self esteem/self worth issue. Though in young people self-abuse is more often an extreme coping mechanism that seems to help relieve stress; for others it’s a way to make deep emotional wounds more visible. As they have not learned or unable to express the deep strong emotions.

In a nut shell basically self-abuse is an extreme method that some people with overwhelming emotions and/or extreme emotional pain use to show others the pain they are feeling but don’t know how to express or deal with.

As for treatment of the condition, that depends a great deal on the severity of the cause and the wounds being inflicted. It can range from general counseling in mild cases to hospitalization in extreme cases.

If you know someone that is engaging in self-abuse, please contact a health care professional in your area. As strange as it sounds self-abuse often becomes habit forming. If the habit is not broken it can and does grow into dangerous levels. The earlier it is detected and treated the easier it is to break the habit.
