Megiddo or Har Megiddo is the name of a northern Israel city. I caught a bit of a show on that a few days ago. Archeology meets the Old Testament there. The first cite below gives you some hard-to-read history. See if it makes sense to you.
The second citation attempts to discredit the notion of Christianity being "invented" in the fourth century. (Me, I've never had those sorts of doubt, but someone thinks enough to build a web page.)
The third cite is a bit "thee and thou" but gets you closer to the concept of Armageddon.
Hope these three get you going in the right direction. I'm not sure why John the Apostle thought Har Megiddo deserved to be linked to the end of the world.

The word is a mispronounciation of the name of Mount Megiddo (the Hebrew word for mount is 'har'), a mountain in Israel.
In the book of Revelations, Armageddon is presaged by the four horsemen of the apocalypse. They are not specifically named but by description they would seem to be War, Conquest, Famine, and Death. Each is given power over a quarter of the Earth to destroy the human race. Armageddon (the Mountain of Megiddo) is presumably where the great battle between the Angels of both God and Satan will battle.
