CompUSA and Fry's also carry Macs.

You could get a base version of what you want, and upgrade as you can afford it.

Apple has an available line of credit you can apply for to purchase your system. That's how I bought my PowerMac G4 that I'm still using today and it still runs like a champ! That's also how I bought my iPod many years ago.

I feel your pain. I too have been burned by Microsoft and hence why now I'm a die hard Mac user.... which I'm sure is a growing trend. After wasting 20+ years troubleshooting PC problems I finally said "enough" and bought a Mac and it was the best thing I'd ever done for my home computing.

You will love having a Mac. Yes, there's a bit of a learning curve, but it's not hard to overcome. Spend about a week with a Mac and you'll be converted.

And yeah, you could save some money by getting another PC, but I don't care whose name is on the box, they are all the same. Sure you spend a little more money and get a Sony, or an Alienware.... but what use is it to polish a turd.... none.

The big difference between a PC and a Mac is Windows compared to OSX. Windows is the most unstable, unsecure, and frustrating system on the market. OSX is the most stable, most secure and most user friendly system on the market. OSX is written to optimize system resources, where Windows is written to be a bloated pile of crap. Because of this fact, my 7 year old PowerMac G4 consistently out performs my wife's 1 year old Dell. In fact, when we got married she hated the fact that I used a Mac and now I can never get on my own computer because she refuses to use hers since it's such a dog. My 7 year old Mac is capable of running all the latest and greatest software and runs them exceptionally well.... you can't do that on a PC.

One last note... yeah Macs are more money. That's old news. But they will last you much longer. I have never had a PC last me 7 years. And I'm a hard person to please when it comes to performance. Hell, I've never had a PC last me 2 years. If I'd had stuck with PCs instead of switching to Mac, by now I would have burned through 3 PCs and gearing up to tank a 4th, and would have spent EXPONENTIALLY more money on replacing PCs and LOADS more time working on fixing my computers, rather than the computer working for me.

And for the extra money, you get the best customer service in the industry.

There is a special deals page on the Apple Store where they have refurbished systems at discount prices. Pretty stinkin' good prices too. Also, if you are a student there's an educational store online. You kind of have to hunt for the link but it's on the front page of the store... and hint... they don't verify student status. ;-)

Check out for a used one around your town frequently you can get them refurbished and the retailer may endorse a secondary inhouse warrantly. I sympathize with your situation it's tough to drop $2700 on a mac when you can litterally buy 4 or 5 low end PC's for the same price!

I personally bought a mac with no experience at all and have never looked back since - probably the best decision I ever made when it comes to computers so yeah, I would highly recommend you get yourself a mac and spending that little extra in the long run really pays off.

As far as financing it goes, you can pay monthly thru the mac store - http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?nnmm=browse&mco=7B723646&node=home/shop_mac/family/imac

P.S. Once you go Mac, you never go back ;)

If you are not familiar with the Mac's operating system, you should try one before you buy one. It's usually pretty easy to go from using Windows machines to a Mac, but they are different enough that you'll have to learn some things. I would hate for you to feel buyer's remorse.
