My current ride is a 2006 Harley Davidson 35th Anniversary edition Superglide. The engine is a Twin Cam 88 (1450cc). It has been retroverted to a chain drive. Way back when I was in the age bracket you mention, I was riding a 1974 Honda CL360 and a 1979 Suzuki GS425L. In the between times, there was an '82 Yamaha XZ550RJ, a Honda CM400A, a CB650 and a CB750. And let's not forget the first two wheel blast - Mom's Puch Maxi (and yes, I've ridden in winter ever since).

Hey Topher
It really does depend on what you want it for, and how you ride - but if you want a brand that doesn't polarise opinion and has a rich and varied catalogue to choose from, you cannot knock Triumph's
The oldies are the dogs bollocks (as we say in the UK) and will give you a wide grin whilst riding and a few things to tinker with in the shed during the dark hours. Have a look at a few of these:
http://www.vintagebike.co.uk/Bike%20Directories/Triumph%20Bikes/Triumph%20Index.htm
for the oldies, or these:
http://www.triumph.co.uk/uk/785.aspx
for the newer ones (one of my bruv's has a black street triple with a few mods. and my god, that is an awesome machine!)
Have a google of some of the names suggested, Ducatti's make some beautiful bikes and MV Augusta's are pretty fantastic too.

Coolness is in the eye of the beholder. If you are serious about finding a bike, then you have to determine what is cool or not.
Personally I like BMW's. They are not cheap but they have some nice looking models.
You might also check out the Internet, looking at the different manufacturers.
Most of the sites do have pictures of the different bikes.
Hope this helps you out.

How about a Buell. I have a 1998 Cyclone. You have the Harley engine giving you the sound and torque and a sport bike style tube frame to take the curves.

Try a Ducati, Its an Italian motorcycle and its super fast but also really expensive. You can see one on the Matrix movie when they have the chase on the highway. I prefer Harleys but these are cool.

Kawasaki made a couple of motorcycles that look a lot like Harleys... had to look again for the radiator. LOL.
