In a video that I made, I use pictures from various websites. An organization saw my video, and they want to post it on their website. Is this fair use? Do I need to get the permissions of the photo owners before the organization can post the video?

Don't worry about that. If you get a complaint, take it down and demand proof of ownership. When that doesn't happen, put it back up.

Theoretically, you do need the permission of the owners of the photos before using them. But nobody really knows the origin of a lot of photos online, and most people who put photos online are not constantly on the lookout for their pictures elsewhere. So you should be alright. I'm pretty sure the worst thing that could happen is that you would get threatened and have to take it down. Good night!

Oh yeah, if you actually know the owners of the photos then by all means ask them. I assumed you were talking about some pictures you got from some place and you didn't know who to ask.

Not fair use, not even close, and you are about to put the organization at risk too.

see www.chillingeffects.org for definitive answers, and how easy it will be for anyone who owns the photos to take down your web site and the other organization too.

Not.

You need to permission from the owners of the images to distribute them.

Yes, you should. You committed an infringement or a copy right violation. Sounds extreme, but is taken seriously. Just e mail them and tell them. Most times they will let you.
