The family that you create should always come first but keep in mind that too much of anything is never a good thing.
Try to be the host for a friend if you can't get out without the kids or have other family ties that keep you in.
I invite all friends and family to holidays and social get togethers and try to have at least a dinner once every 3 months.
I have a 16 yr old daughter, 3 yr old son, a miserable mother in law, an Italian mother, and a dependent husband.
I work from home and keep my friends. I get out rarely but always stay in touch through real emails and monthly phone calls to those that are unable to come to us.
If you lose all of your friends you will forget who you are. Stay who you are, it is best for your family.

Hi friend,
No, it's not wise to lose your friends. But family should take precedence. The problem with us is this mentality that if we can't spend time being with our friends, they ain't our friends anymore. With the latest technology available, the cellphones and the computers, it's very easy to say "hi" & "hellos" to our friends we don't have time to meet. I'm 41, married and have 4 kids. I admit aside from work, all my time is spent on my family. For me it's not a "should do", it's a preference. But I never missed the opportunity to greet and say "hellos" to my friends. Some of them, we haven't seen each other in years. But the friendship remains. We remember each other's birthday, call each other during holidays. To say that you don't have time (to call up, text or chat in computer) with your friends is simply an excuse. Had you live hundred of years ago, it would had been understandable. But now! Normally, the time you are totally focused on your family is when the kids are in the growing up stage. When they grow up & leave nest. You and your mate will be back to square one. If you 2 get along, fine, but if not, without friends you'll be left out alone.

I think family does come first. But its also important to have friends. You don't have to hang out with them constantly, and if they also have a family then they understand.
