We have five cats and I've had it with this awful litter box smell. It's so bad that I'm clean out the litter box at least twice a day. I've tried fabreeze and baking soda already. And before I go out and spend lots of money on stuff that doesn't work. I'm asking you (the reader)...

What works and what doesn't work on that awful kitty litter box?

Don't buy cheap or generic litters.
Scoop daily.
Clean entire pan weekly (plastic absorbs urine odors)
Buy new pans every 4-6 months (when washing no longer is enough)
I like: "Dr Elseys" CatAttract litter
Worlds Best Clumping Litter
Arm and Hammer Cat Litter
Purina Maxx Clumping Litter

I don't have cat's, but I've worked in animal hospitals, so I have some advice.
First, you should try switching your cat litter. The best litter with odour, and absorbancy, is Yesterday's News. There's also other recycled news paper litter, that's the same idea but other brands, and cheaper. I would look further into that. I've used Yesterday's News as a litter box for my guinea pigs, and I've never had an issue with odour.
I've also heard about Arm&Hammer Baking Soda type cat litter... I'm not sure about the differences between that, and just putting baking soda in to the litter, but thats another thing to look into.

How do you clean the litter box? Do you wash the box itself, or just dump and refill? I find the best, and safe, way to clean and eat odour is vinegar. You could try cleaning your litter boxes with vinegar.

Considering you have a few cats, I would try buying more litter boxes. Although, it may end up seeming like you have litter boxes everywhere in your house.

Theres one other option, and it's a little funny. I've heard that it really does work. Potty training your cats! Hehe, I know, it sounds really odd. You can buy kits at a pet supply store, or online, and it explains how to train them. You can even teach them to flush the toilet. It may not work for all of your cats, but if 2 or 3 learnt to do this, it could be really helpful.
I hope that was useful, or atleast gave you some ideas.
Good luck.

I've always just cleaned it lots, used one of those timing air freshers right near the box, and put the box in a very airy area

Get rid of the 5 cats, then remove the flea infested carpets, replace the scratched up, cat hair everywhere furniture with all new, paint the whole place, open the windows for a month, take a bath and maybe in time your stink will go away.

Or you could just get 10 more cats, never change their indoor bathrooms as your usual, and the stink you have now will seem like nothing..
