"I think it's hard to project four years from now," said Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois in the opening moments of a campaign debate in the nation's first primary state.

"It is very difficult to know what we're going to be inheriting," added Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York.

"I cannot make that commitment," said former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina.

They are trying to not let their real views get in the way of getting them elected.

No one person alone-Congressmen, President, etc-can bring the troops home. It will take co-operation between people in several branches. The President can order the troops home, but Congress needs to vote for the funding to bring them home..the planes, fuel, etc, cost money and money is Congress' job. A President who is unwilling to order the troops home can be pressured by Congress to do so, but that would take a large majority of Congress voting to do so, and neither party has such a large majority...yet. To manage this now would require having many Republicans vote with Democrats, and so far that has not happened. So, The Republicans are responsible for sending the troops where they don't belong, and the Republicans are responsible for keeping them there. After the next election there may be enough Democrats in Congress to give the Dems the large majority they need, and then the troops will come home. As soon as both the President, and a large majority of House, and Senate, members are Democrat, the troops will be home. I, therefore have nothing to feel betrayed about. It is the Republicans keeping the troops in Iraq/Afghanistan, and voters are beginning to realize that. I think a lot of current Republican House, and Senate, members will be gone, and replaced by Democrats, soon. Then the troops will be home.

Democrat candidates are playing it safe not to demand for a recall of the troops because they want to get the votes of those who support the war.

Let's say your boss was being replaced and the company's owners come to you. They say: "we will give you this job if you can guarantee to double profits in the first year."

Without anymore information than you have right now, today, can you make that promise?

Most people can't, simply because they don't know what will be involved until they jump in and start.

It's not betrayal, it's common sense.

I do not feel betrayed. You cannot guarantee something which is uncertain. Guaranteeing something like this could become of conflicting interest with the oath of office, which would be a no no.

Nope, this is a real big mess, and if someone did guarantee that they could fix Bush's mess in that amount of time, I would suspect that they were lying.
