Contact the Salvation Army and Goodwill. Some police and fire departments will help needy families, too. Check with your local VFW post; they do a lot of community work. Also, ask at some of your local churches because they are always willing to help people in need. I'm not sure, but maybe your local Red Cross can help direct you. Check in the phone book for the local Social Services. They may also be able to direct you. With most of these places, you may need to provide documentation -- doctor's report, your previous and current income, etc. Some of them may be able to help with groceries and utility bills, too.

Spend time from now until Christmas helping them make gifts for each other. We used to cut paper dolls from catalogs (Sear's still has one) and maybe you have a neighbor has some that they will part with. Styrofoam balls and fabric scraps and they can make balls to hang on the tree for each other. If you don't already have an artifical tree and can't afford a real one (which you probably can't), make popcorn and string it and chains from construction paper to decorate the house. If you have an evergreen tree outside, bring some branches inside and get that fresh pine smell. Place it on a table and decorate it. Give each child a bar of soap and help them sculpt something for their siblings. You can take the scraps and make a ball and use it. Maybe some of your friends or neighbors have some toys that their children have outgrown and your children would like. If they do and you get them, you can paint, repair and such. If your children are young, you could cut a box and draw a game board like "Chutes and Ladders" and teach them how to play. Whittle a piece of wood and paint it like dice to move the playing piece. Use big buttons and paint them different colors for the playing pieces. For older children, you can use the same principle and make games like "Password". When you go to the grocery store, get paper bags and have them color the bags and use them for wrapping paper instead of buying it. Teach them Christmas carols and take them to a local nursing home and go caroling. Just call ahead and let the home know when you would like to come. The residents will love it. If you know an elderly person, he or she may be able to give you ideas about what they did during the depression. Go the library and borrow "A Christmas Carol" and read some of it to them each night during the holidays. Tell them the story of Christmas, the birth of Christ and the precious gift He gave. I've said a prayer for you and your family and truly hope your situation improves. God Bless.

What a great opportunity to teach them that Christmas is about more than presents. Think of ways you can make the day special without buying gifts. Maybe have each person make something from the heart. Or do some special activities with them.

I know some families that have opted to make Christmas special without expensive gifts even when money wasn't an issue. I remember most the games we played at Christmas
and the Christmas story being read.

There are plenty of agencies out there willing to help anyone in need for toys and christmas food basket. Call churches and other places... ask your case worker to help you.

Something else you might think of doing for next year is start buying gifts on sale and hiding them in your closet or garage for christmas.. This way a gift once a month will help by the time December rolls around.

Best wishes to you

i think that the advantages outweigh the negatives. I stay in Australia - we don't get so hung up over here with regards to the hyperlinks between college and faith. i individually like the assumption of putting a container jointly - it is not only about giving, it incredibly is approximately reflecting on our own Christmas traditions and being grateful for what we've. To think of that this can be the spotlight of a new child's year is gloomy, yet in addition makes me experience grateful for my own circumstances.

There are plently of foundations that could help you out. Or if you are an active church member, I'm sure a church would glady have a toy drive in your honor for your children. Otherwise just make them special gifts, be creative! Memorable, inexpensive gifts usually are the best way to go anyway!

Buy them what you can afford . But spend time with them and teach them the true meaning of Christmas. Watch as many Christmas programs as you can . Play Christmas music - decorate the house. Get in the sprit.

The meaning of Christmas is togetherness, and not always about presents. The fact that you're with your children should be for them and for you, the best Christmas gift of all.

You can call around to Chruches, malls, and community centers to find one that has a program where people drop off new toys and they are given to needy children.
God Bless!
