I was driving along today and my car ( a 1999 Honda CR-V, 87,000 miles) just died on me. It just completely shut off. I put on my hazzards and managed to pull it over. Then I finally got it started again and drove off. This has happened about three other times in the last nine months. I never worried about it before because it always happened when I had just started it up or when I was coming to a stop, never when I was going 50 mph on a busy road. What could possibly be causing my car to do this? Should I see a mechanic and what should I tell or ask him/her to check out?

First check and see if there are any recall on the model of your vehicle. See if other Honda CR-V's are having the same recalls, problems, etc. Call the Honda and see if you still have a warranty - I'm not sure if with your miles it still covered. The Honda dealership should be able to help you and take care of any mechanical problems. Before paying a mechanic do all the steps above - mechanics are pricy. Good luck with your car!

Hi RL. Your problem is serious enough to see a mechanic. If it's like my auto, when everything dies the whole steering mechanism freezes.I have had trouble with the automatic choke on my car. My mechanic said that if the car does not have sufficient revs; and isn't regularly tuned, then the motor will cut out.All modern cars are computerised in some way. Maybe you should get your electrics checked out.If your car is starting as you say, and driveable, it might be you have a faulty fuse. Hopefully that's all it is . Happy Christmas.

I would definitely go to the Honda dealership. There are two safety recalls on the 1999 Honda CR-V. Just tell them exactly what is happening to the car. Explain it just the way you did in your question.

Could be the fuel filter or fuel injector. Sounds like the gas is not going to the engine. Could be bad gas or water in the gas.

have the shop scan the computer first to make sure you have no problems with any of the sensors or anything going bad on it,this will also help in repairing it,if it gives a trouble code it will make it a lot easier to find and repair the problem, good luck on it.

A good mechanic will figure out what to fix if you just tell him the problems.
