Yes, giving is ALWAYS important - whether it is giving your time, listening when someone needs to be heard, giving love, giving a smile to a stranger, giving a shoulder to cry on when the need arises, giving food and necessities to people in need, giving toys for children of poor families, giving a gift to a loved one at Christmas to show them how much you love them.
It's GETTING presents that is not important. It's more blessed to give than to receive...

Yes, but not to just family members. Today I learned that a family next door may not have Christmas, so I am trying to think of how I can do something really nice for them although the mother and I do not really like one another too much.
I was just going to leave the presents at the door as to surprise them. I am not worried about recieving the recognition for the action. Or a basket for them, although I haven't been able to find out how their food situation is yet.
Christmas is about giving and I believe that is is important to give for the joy of giving. They have been having a rough go of it as off late, and I know how it is. Although we don't have much, we are doing better than what we have done in the past, and I want to share our good fortuane.
I know her pride won't allow her to accept something straight out so this season enbales me to do this in such a way that is "acceptable" for both of us.

It was important to the story of the Nativity. The three kings (also known as three wise men) traveled far to greet the new born King. They brought gifts to show respect to the baby.
We should honor the tradition by giving gifts to the poor children (born in stables figuratively) who may grow to be future kings.
