I know that in terms of population Northern California is no match for Greater L.A. alone, yet the north is much greener and appears to be wealthier. Yet still, which is safer, friendlier, having more facilities, better education, etc?
In other words, which one is more suitable for a good peaceful life? Please explain...

Northern California is less crowded....except in the San Francisco area. Southern California is warmer.
It really depends on what you like. The good thing about California is the diversity of the environments. You can live in a small mountain town where it snows in the winter, large urban area, the desert, a small Central Valley agricultural town, small coastal town, or a large urban coastal city.
There is something for everyone. Housing is usually cheaper in Northern California...except for San Francisco, which is probably the highest in the state.
My personal preference would probably be the Central Coast...it's smaller towns and mild weather.

SF bay area and Big LA metro is about 50 to 50
NoCa is more expensive, higher pay, colder, prettier, more cultural.
SoCa is more relax, warmer and nice beach,more entertainment, the traffic is terrible
Both have safe area and unsafe area. Best area in bay area: san mateo, santa clara county along 280 and san ramon valley along 680
LA area: santa monica mountain around and east ventura county along 101 and 1.

I prefer East California..just moved from North Virginia and am thinking of West Dakota, except road maps are hard to find..

OMG! Trees or freeways? I will take the beauty of Northern California over the smog and traffic of L.A.
