I am sarcastic and witty; however, I would like to be nicer in general and sometimes things pop out of my mouth without me meaning to say them. How can I stop myself from being so sarcastic (sometimes mean/hurtful, if the person isn't there)??

Monitor what you say BEFORE you say it...-It's the only way to "dull the edge"-of a sharp wit... :)

Instead of the general quips that come to mind when your being sarcastic, direct them towards yourself. People will laugh but know your not really beating up on yourself...cause your being sarcastic. But if you do it too much they will. So throw in some general observations that aren't biting. Telling clean non-offensive jokes (depends on your crowd) can really help too.

I don't think you can necessarily. I think sarcasm and quick wits are simply part of someone's personality. I'm exactly the same way as you are, so I understand what you mean.

I've simply explained to my friends that I'm not trying to be mean, I just speak without thinking. They understand, and they normally just find it funny.

Many a times in our excitement to share our wit we inadvertendly hurt peoples' sentiments. If the victim is very close to us, we can always explain it to them. While dealing with people who are not too close, it is better to be a bit careful that the regret later.

Your actually not being hateful. Sarcasm is a trait that comes natural to those of intellectual backgrounds. Do not change your ways to please those who surround you.
