We are a bit old to worry about parties all the time. We are american and do not like Bush, but what does that have to do with seeing the country. Is it best to fly or cruise there. What spots showed we see?I want to know what is the best place to stay for two weeks

Being born in Greece and now living in the USA, I congratulate you on your choice of vacation.I have traveled to Greece many times, alone or with my kids and/or husband.
Thinking back, if I were you, I'd probably start off with a cruise to the Greek islands, after arriving in Athens by plane and staying there for 2-3 days. The cruise would take you 3-4-5 days, depending on how many islands you like to see. The basic cruise,(4 days) covers Mykonos, Patmos, Efessos (Turkey), Santorini and Crete or Rhodes. (I suggest the one that goes to Rhodes, you spend more time there and is more enjoyable)
Spend about 1-2 more days in Athens sightseeing and then start touring the mainland.
I strongly suggest you use a pre hired car and driver, is not advisable to drive in Greece (you will know the reasons when there:)
Starting in Peloponnese, visit Mystras, Monemvasia, Nafplion (never been there but I heard its beautiful).
Coming up from the Rio-Antirio bridge,(the most interesting in Europe and featured in many civil engineering magazines for its architectural beauty and design).
Follow the path that airpole described above.Corfu is a gorgeous island and try to go there if time permits.
Work with a reputable travel agent, one who specializes in Greek vacations.Look on line and let us know from time to time as we can give you unbiased information.

First of all, it depends if you are visiting in the summer or in the winter. If you come in the summer, it is best to fly to Athens, stay for 2-3 days, make some excursions to major archaeological sites, such as Nafplion-Epidaurus -Mycenae or Delphi-Hosios Lukas, either by rented car or by an organised tour (you will find many agencies in the area of Plaka in Athens), and then be off to a couple of islands, better by plane, if you can afford it, but highspeed ferries are OK too. Cruises are not so good, you spend most of the time on the ship, and miss the actual interesting thing which is to stay on the picturesque islands with the amazing beaches. Islands that you will enjoy are Rhodos, Santorini, Myconos, Sifnos, Syros or Paros.
If you come in the winter, things are different, because the islands will be rather deserted. And it is better to visi the mainland, such as the area of Delphi, Meteora, the huge rocks with monasteries on top, they are impressive, Zagorochoria, very picturesque and in amazing landscapes, with gorges and rivers, etc. For this option you need to hire a car or take the bus to Ioannina or Kalampaka (the nearest cities) and then hire a car to move locally.

Greece is a great holiday destination, and how to travel depends on what you want to see and how much time you have to spent. Your question is clear, you want to see Greece and not swimming pools in fancy hotels. You want to see Greek people and not mangle with the variety of tourists from all over the world constantly. So you will have to move around with a rental car after having made a road map for yourselves. Book hotels in advance if you travel in the months June till September; otherwise look to book at a price underway.
Island hopping with ferries is fun too.

Yasou, or Yasas is a more poliet greeting. The best way will depend on your budget and what you are interested in. If you like to get drunk and act the fool goto Corfu.

If you want to have parties and fun goto the Aegean Islands. Athena is good for 3 or 4 days, then goto the Islands or head north. The Greek Islands are the best in the world, if you can go there. I like Paros alot, 24 hour party island.

If you are American as long as you hate Bush you will have a great time, we Greeks don't like war and destruction, there's to much in our past.

The person above has said Good Morning (kali mera - good day),

Kali mera!
You have to be more specific - where are you travelling from - what interests you? Beach? History? Mountains? Villages?

The best way to see all Greece is hire a car and travel! It's a small country - you can fit a lot of the country (mainland) into 2 weeks - or you can island hop - travelling by ferry (or hydrofoil) from one island to the next.

I wrote kalimera because it was 6.30am when I wrote the answer! I wasn't being condescending.
I agree with airpole (seems we have our own mutual fan club going - or on the same wavelengths)
Everytime I go to Delphi I see loads of American tourists - do you want to visit historical sites or prefer a leisurely cruise? I would feel restricted on a cruise - but that's me! and I hate the thought of rough sea!
Whatever you choose - run it past us and we'll tell you if we think you'll be benefitting from it or whether there's a better alternative.

I'm sure you'll have a good time no matter what you choose.

Why am I always getting thumbs down - I thought this was a good answer! Nowt stranger than folk!

Check out northern Greece. Unspoilt and has a lot to offer.

Sure political preferences play not role on your visit and neither Corfu is the insane place to be. I know. I live there.
But all in all as Asimenia has pointed out, the best will be to travel car and then you will only see a part of the country. Assuming that you will be flying here, your place of entry is Athens. So you can do it in a circle starting from there and going down all the east side of the Peloponnese as far down as Sparta and then cross the Taygetus mountain to Kalamata on the West and the Mani area , coming up on the west side through Olympia to Patras and then over to the the other side over the new bridge to cross to Roumeli and on to the east to Delphi and from there to Lamia going north to Pilion and Meteora, on to Katerini to Dion and Vergina, Alexander's the Great cities. From there you can go to Thessaloniki and further east to visit at least Chalkidiki and Agion Oros.
This itinerary taken on a leisurely manner can cover your two week period, but you will still have seen only one tenth of the land's beauty. The islands are also a strong point in Greece and My island is one of the strongest along with Rhodes and Crete. Young people prefer Santorini too.
Alternative to this is taking a cruise that usually start off Italy and go to Corfu, Katakolo for Olympia, Patmos, Santorini, Piraeus and some place in Turkey depending the duration and the itinerary.
If you need more information on this please contact me.
