I never knew that until I read about it a few hours ago. I always thought the Chicago and Detroit franchises were new ventures that were started from scratch in 1926.

Yes and No

They were brand new franchises in the NHL that bought players from existing teams.

The New York Americans were similarly built. The New York Americans were granted a franchise. A month or so later, the Hamilton Tigers folded. 80% of those players were bought by the Americans franchise.
