By the way the only time my engine actually works is when i hit the gas but once i take my foot off of it it completely stops working.

Its not my batteries I jump started the car today even when everything came on. I have a toyota camry 2001 and it has only 52000 miles if that helps.

You need to provide more details. What year car is it? did you have any recent work done to it? There are 3 things to Check.
1- Do you have spark at the spark plugs?
2- Do you have fuel?
3- Is the timing right?
If something isnt physically broken (IE your crankshaft, and it probably isnt) One of those things wont be working. Im going with fuel based on your sketchy description and first place to look is the fuel filer, then the fuel pump.

well all of the things you named work off the battery so they are no signal that the car should be working.
since you say the car only works only when you press the gas, then it must definitely be a problem with the engine.
more specifically something to do with the fuel injection or air intake. it could be the sensor that regulates the amount of air and gasoline that goes into the engine.
now if you dont wanna take it to the mechanic, then try little things like "making sure the gas cap is on, the car has gas in it, there is nothing blocking the exhaust pipe, etc"
good luck

You really need a professional to look at it and not the place you bought it from. It could be different things. Fuel pump, fuel filter, carburetor.. I had a little rod on my carburetor that was getting stuck or hung or whatever. It would run but died every time I took my foot off the gas. My nephew fixed that and it is fine now. The carburetor is touchy though so get someone that knows what they are doing. Whatever it is, the wrong person could just make it a lot worse. Good Luck.

Let me get this straight, your car does not start, but when you start it everything works but you cannot start it, and when you start it and take your foot off the gas it does not run?
UGH! my head hurts.
Its cold and you have a weak battery, the car needs to warm up before it will idle without having your foot on the gas, the choke is not adjusted properly or if you have a fuel injected car the fuel enrichment circuit or the temp sensor is faulty.
The fact that it started with a jump start means IT IS your battery, your radio, fan and light take very little current the starter needs LOTS of power which your battery does not have. (it might start fine in warmer weather)
OK so your car is fuel injected, my guess the temperature sensor is bad and not letting the enrichment circuit do its job on a cold weather start up, I bet if the car warms up it runs fine.
My suggestion is to get a new battery this will solve the starting problem, as for the idle if it idles fine once it warms up like I suspect, you can live with it till you have the time to take it in and get it fixed.

Sounds like you have more than one problem, that are not related. For the starting problem, it is very likely a loose cable. To test this, try and move both cable terminals on the battery. If you get any movement at all, then tighten the connections. Make sure to check the cable connection at the starter too. My bet is that it either the negative connection at the battery, or the connection at the starter.
As for the issue of stopping when you take your foot off of the gas petal.......hate to say it.........but the ONLY way to check that out is to take it to either the dealer(my choice), or to a repair shop that is capable of diagnosing modern electronic systems on cars.

There is no easy fix-you have an electrical problem. Could be the ignition, could be the starter, the distributor-only a mechanic can find out. If I was there I could maybe find it but with newer cars I probably couldn't fix it.
Same thing with it not running without the gas-could be your fuel injector, could be the carburetor, could be the idle.
Are you sure it was running perfectly? Always take a used car to a mechanic before you buy.

you probably need gas. the gas gauge is probably broken, i guess it says you have a little bit of gas but really you are almost out. either that or you do have a tiny bit of gas, but your fuel pump is not working all that well. put in more gas and it will probably work OK.
call the person that sold you the car and they'll probably explain.
also if it is really cold where you live sometimes that can make if tough to keep the car on. just hold your foot on the pedal a LITTLE bit till it warms up.

previously you replace something get rid of and clean the two battery terminals and all cable connections from the battery to the starter, do no longer forget approximately the floor cable from the unfavourable placed up on the engine block. many cases those situations are brought about by a foul connection, sufficient modern-day passes to function the upload-ons yet no longer sufficient to function the starter. That being suggested, batteries can strengthen a condition referred to as floor cost wherein the battery would not placed out sufficient modern-day to function something with a huge draw, like the starter, yet can manage some upload-ons. purely treatment is a clean one.

Could be a number of things, take it to a real mechanic get it looked over then demand the car place to fix what you found wrong..unless you bought it as is.

It could be the battery that needs to be replaced. But it will probably help for a mechanic to take a look at this for you.
