A lot of them have gone back to school or to their other careers. The real estate agents that target high end market value properties (rich people that will always be rich) are still around. Also, people that saved during the "good old days" also are around because they didn't spend their commissions. In fact, a lot of them are investing in foreclosures now. See the book below for reference.

Those who showed up on the scene to 'skim the cream' while things were hot are now gone elsewhere. Those of us who work real estate as a CAREER are still there. There's plenty to do in real estate. Foreclosures need to be sold, as well as conventional sales. There is still a goodly number of buyers and sellers out there who are not affected by the current situation. We simply work harder to get them what they need.

Because lenders are in the business to make money, they list the REO's with Realtors. Those Realtors are selling the foreclosure homes.
The agents not willing to work are going to leave the business, the easy money is gone.

The smart ones survive regardless of the market. I help people buy and sell foreclosures. It's great because I get paid to help other people.
