It's interesting how many "patriots" say they don't think much of the ACLU when it is an organization that is willing to stand up for people no matter what their political background is and no matter what the personal background of the person is. The ACLU cares about rights for all, even for those most scorned, feared, or hated in our society. There's tons of people they've supported who I despised, but I was glad the ACLU was willing to do what was right, not what was convenient.

Amnesty International has brought to light so many international incidents of democratic political activism that have been crushed by dictators, totalitarian governments, and despots. You'd think this would be one of the conservatives most highly thought of groups-defending those working for democracy, in spite of harassment, imprisonment, and death. I don't know why that is considered liberal, but hey, the work is important, however you label it.

Certainly. I think of a monologue from "The American President":

"For the record: yes, I am a card-carrying member of the ACLU. But the more important question is why aren't you, Bob? Now, this is an organization whose sole purpose is to defend the Bill of Rights, so it naturally begs the question: Why would a senator, his party's most powerful spokesman and a candidate for President, choose to reject upholding the Constitution? If you can answer that question, folks, then you're smarter than I am, because I didn't understand it until a few hours ago. America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the "land of the free". "

We hear people on the right bash the ACLU as super-liberal. Even Sean Hannity has bashed them for only supporting liberals. Except for the fact that in college, Hannity for thrown off the radio station for "offensive" speech, but was successfully defended by the ACLU on the grounds of free speech.

The ACLU doesn't always defend liberal interests. The ACLU has helped Neo-Nazi's with thier right to free speech, Senator Craig when he got caught up with the restroom thing, Rush Limbaugh when he got caught with a boat load of pain killers, and various other free speech or privacy issues. You might hate them, but wait till you are denied your rights and be glad they are there for you.

Amnesty International is also a great organization. They bring to light the injustices of the worlds legal systems. They have saved many a life by shining a light and making people aware.

Yes. The ACLU is one of the main forces standing for the Democratic rights of ordinary Americans.
Amnesty International promotes and defends human rights around the world without regard for popularity or political agendas. They spoke out against Saddam, speak out against Saudi Arabia regularly but are also not too timid to confront the US and the EU in regards to their human rights violations.

Because I think any progress or real change starts with people having their basic human rights I'm proud to say I'm a member of Amnesty International.

Yes, of course; cons who hate ACLU should remember that they were right there defending Limbaugh's right to the privacy of his medical records. Even when I don't agree with all the stands they take I realize they are standing not on a lib or con philosophy but on the constitution. That rocks! For amnesty international - systems of trial, jail, and sentencing should always and constantly be under scrutiny and they provide that service. Which also rocks!

"Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognised human rights to be respected and protected for everyone." That was from their website, but obviously not a "feminazi" organisation if its for human rights.

Yes, because every time I read what these no brain idiots do I feel like my IQ went up by 25 points. It's actually better than staying at a Holiday Inn Express.
Like the guy above that thinks the USA would be Nazi Germany without the ACLU. Read history. We were not Nazis before the ACLU so why would we be Nazis with out them. God, I feel smarter every time they open their mouths or sit in front of a keyboard.

Of course. As anyone appreciative of our Constitution would be. After all, I would never be so self-important as to suggest that the only organizations that should exist are ones I belong to / agree with / support. That would just be ignorant.

ACLU, not really, actually, not at all. Amnesty, I have seen mixed results from it, so unsure at the moment.
