My middle school track coach doesn't consider it a sport, because the cheerleaders at the middle school I went to just sat around and looked pretty. I woudn't consider most cheerleading a sport, but there are a few people who are really good and can lift people up and twirl them and stuff and i call those people in a sport. But for the most part, your friends are right, cheerleading isn't a sport.
The OED defines sport as "Participation in games or exercises, esp. those of an athletic character or pursued in the open air; such games or amusements collectively.' So technically, cheerleading is a sport, but real athletes usually don't consider it a sport when compared to the amount of work it takes to participate in a sport, such as water polo or track and field.

Cheerleading is totally a sport. They condition you. They have you lift up other girls. It is not only a sport but it is a hard sport! I have been in a cheer squad for less than half a year and it has already givin me abs and toned my muscles. Thats more than track, basketball, volleyball, and other sports did for me! Cheerleading is a sport, no doubt!

well i am a cheerleader and i dont think it is a sport. sports include this think called sportsmanship...that means showing respect for your opponent as well as other sports...if cheerleading truely was a sport, then there wouldn't be any girls claiming that cheerleading is better than football..that they work harder, or that it is better....there wouldn't be any petty drama or attitudes...people would just accecpt something the way it is and just try to do their best....cheereleaders who show true sportsmanship are very rare and i appreciate them...i in addition to being a cheerleader, i am a sprinter, and the cheer squad and track team are two completly different things...i felt like my track team as a family..the seniors did not claim superiority over the newbie freshmen..people were excited for each other when someone else won because we know they deserve it...runners work hard and dont complain...that is what i think is a true sport
