I a Classics student and I did a whole reseach paper on the Iliad and there is a lot to say about it. Some points that you may want to consider about its history and impact on literature:
* We don't know if it even happened. The story in the Iliad is simply a poem but the ancient Greeks treated it as history.
* It is the first written record of an epic story and set the ideal for heroes. Many epic stories after that were witten with the ideal image of heroes such as Agamemnona, Achilles and Hector.
* If you read the Iliad closely there is evidence of the weapons they used and their war techniques (hoplite phalanx) but keep in mind that Homer wrote this down based on his memory of it and it could have been from many different periods from Mycenae and the Dark Ages.
*Perhaps you should look up Schlieman (not sure about the spelling). He excavated Troy in the early 19 hundreds and although he did a bad job at it, he still proved that Troy did in fact exist and therefore opens the door to the Trojan War acctually having taken place.
I don't know if any of this will help, but good luck.
