It is named after the ancient Greek deity of the sky (Uranus, Οὐρανός), the father of Kronos (Saturn) and grandfather of Zeus (Jupiter). Uranus was the first planet discovered in modern times. Though it is visible to the naked eye like the five classical planets, it was never recognized as a planet by ancient observers due to its dimness. Sir William Herschel announced its discovery on March 13, 1781, expanding the known boundaries of the solar system for the first time in modern history. This was also the first discovery of a planet made using a telescope.

It is named after a Roman god. If you see something else there, you have the mentality of an adolescent. It was discovered by Sir William Herschel, but it was originally named "Georgium Sidius" (George's Star, referring to King George III), and was called the Georgian for years afterward.

The 7th rock from the sun was named after Uranus, the father of Saturn in Roman mythology (Cronus in Greek mythology) & grandfather of Jupiter (Zeus). Of course, since we have a # of sophomoric answerers here, it should fascin8 them (& u perhaps) that Saturn killed Uranus by cutting off his u-no-whats. & he got his come-uppance from Jupiter. Incidentally, what happened 2 Uranus' severed private parts was that it fell in the sea & somehow, Venus was born from it & stood on that scallop like in that Botticelli portrait. & I think that Herschel guy discovered the planet; I dunno if he named it.

Humans, cause men come from Mars and women come from Venus, so you must be talking out of Uranus.
