My friend is breastfeeding her baby but is planning to take ecstasy soon. Can anyone tell me how long the ecstasy will stay in her system? I don't want her to hurt her baby, so I will make her express all the damaged milk and throw it away.

I don't want any judgements, because it is not my decision. I just want information to use to help her baby. PLease no judgemental answers. Just helpful ones, based on knowledge or experience.

Psychstimulants

* Drugs labelled as 'psychostimulants' include a diverse range of CNS stimulants such as:
o Amphetamine (speed)
o Cocaine (coke, snow)
o Methamphetamine (crystal, meth, speed, ice)
o Methylphenidate - Ritalin
o Methylene dioxy-methamphetamine (MDMA - ecstasy)
* Stimulants activate the CNS and are often used for the effects such as:
o Euphoria
o Increased sense of well being
o Increased energy
o Improved cognitive and psychomotor performance
o Suppression of appetite
o Insomnia
o More confidence and over confidence
* Breastfeeding is not recommended while using psychostimulants
* Cease breastfeeding for 24 - 48 hours after the use of speed or ecstasy
* Breastfeeding should stop for 24 hours after cocaine use
* Breast milk should be expressed and discarded for the above periods

(24-36 hours, its a scan of a book so I can't copy it)

No reports describing the use of ecstasy or MDMA during human lactation have been located. The molecular weight (about 179) is low enough, however, that excretion into milk should be expected. The closely related drug amphetamine is concentrated in breast milk with milk:plasma ratios ranging from 2.8 to 7.5 (see Amphetamine). The American Academy of Pediatrics considers amphetamines to be contraindicated during breast feeding (7).

Um.... I'm breastfeeding currently. I have never researched ecstasy in breastmilk. But I know EVERYTHING she eats, takes, and drinks goes to her breast milk. Theres some research done on the side effects of smoking pot while breast feeding, some say less then .03 percent gets into the breast milk while others say it can last up to a month. Personally, I wouldn't. I know its been two years but whats another 6 months?? honestly, you breast feed to do whats right for your baby. I'm sure she can wait 6 months to take an illegal drug.

if your friend was to do this drug i would say 1.store milk or feed formula for at least a couple days 2. USE A TEST KIT to verify what she is taking is in fact what she thinks she is taking 3. dont get from strangers always from people you trust (yet still use a kit!!!!!) 4. if able take pure MDMA NOT xtc because you never know what other types of chemicals are put in it (this is not the 90's anymore xtc is rarely ever "pure") 5.have a sitter for the night (the effects should only last for at most 3/5 hours but you still want to give time to fully feel "normal" before becoming a mother again 6. WATER WATER WATER and melatonin are your friends for recovery But most importantly it always better to wait til baby is fully on formula. Hope this helps coming from an old ex-raver who understands the drug (also ALWAYS do research on something before just trying it).....and make sure she is in a safe environment.

For someone who's asked for people not to be judgemental, your all being a bunch of bitches to be honest. You don't know this woman so to say she isn't a responsible mother and that the baby is in danger is disgusting. If your saying this it's probably because you haven't experienced drugs yourself, and fair play that's your choice, after all that's what life is about.... choices. Women go out and get so drunk they don't know what they are doing, but because its legal its deemed ok to society. I disagree. but that's my opinion, if you want to do it go ahead. Maybe she just wants a good night out and this is how she lets off steam. For me I'm the same but it doesn't make me a bad person or mother. I work hard to care for my baby and give her all the love care and affection she needs, well actually I don't have to work hard, it comes naturally, funnily enough I'm not some monster that drugs have taken over. You all seem to think that if you go out and take drugs you must me morally inapt. Absolute rubbish. Like waking up with a hangover you can still cope with day to day obstacles. After taking ecstasy you don't wake up in some parallel universe not knowing what's up or down, you get on with life as normal cause you have too. Drugs have a bad name because of addicts, but then again there are alcoholics. its all about the persons mind, Us humans can let ourselves become addicted to everything and anything. Its all about mind over matter with everything. Lets open our eyes to the bigger picture people. Experience gains opinion. Not what society decides for you. Stop judging and start learning

honestly I wouldn't even consider doing ecstacy until my baby is a little weened from boob feeding. My son is 10 months old and still breastfeedss, i have a lot of milk stored up (atleast a weeks worth) and he eats all kinds of foods and yes, i am considering doing ecstacy next summer (when he's weened) b/c i think it's a fabulous drug and people shouldn't dis it so much and i have a good source of getting really clean mdma. he's going to be staying with his grandma while hubby and i go on vaca so it's all planned out. Just make sure, if she does it, to insure that she has a babysitter for a couple days b/c that stuff effects you for atleast 24 hrs, and if she's smart she'll save up milk or wait til the baby is a little older, if she's gonna do it at all.

One comment:

re. "ANY formula would be better than Ecstasy tainted breast milk" -- I am a bit tired of hearing that nonsense trotted out on here whenever any nursing mother suggests taking ANYTHING that isn't unflavoured organic vegan whole wheat whatever...

"The decision about continuing breastfeeding when the mother takes a drug, for example, is far more involved than whether the baby will get any in the milk. It also involves taking into consideration the risks of not breastfeeding, for the mother, the baby and the family, as well as society. And there are plenty of risks in not breastfeeding, so the question essentially boils down to: Does the addition of a small amount of medication to the mother’s milk make breastfeeding more hazardous than formula feeding? The answer is almost never. Breastfeeding with a little drug in the milk is almost always safer. In other words, being careful means continuing breastfeeding, not stopping."

It takes about 48 hours for drugs containing methamphetamine, I read somewhere a while back that it's still a trace amount. I would say give formula for 72 cause no drug like that stays in your system any longer. I don't know what that one chick was talking about feeling the effects for a month, ridiculous. It's not physically possible. THC is what stays for a month, duh. How do I know this, I studied the sub-culture of meth addicts for a Social Science class at OSU.

At least a week.
But how can you expect people not to answere this question judgemental?
Please tell your friend she shouldn't do stuff like that, it is dangerous even without breastfeeding. Ecstasy that is sold on the street is never pure, one doesn't know what they mix it with, there were cases where they mixed it with rat poison or washing detergent and people got really sick plus it is not so great anyway, I never understood why people are so in to that. It makes you release all your endorphines at once and therefore leaves you mildly to severe depressed for the days after the trip.
And, seriously, I think it is sad that when people have kids that they still can't leave the drugs alone. Seriously, just because she wants to get high doesn't mean her baby wants to, too.
The right thing would be to not do it at all or at least wait until the baby is weaned.
