...in Richard Matheson's original 1954 novel, also entitled "I Am Legend", the character of Neville is immune to a mysterious virus, which has turned the world's population into vampire-like creatures; they all come out at night, in an attempt to destroy him, because after several years since the virus' onslaught, he has become the legendary killer of their 'kind' (...during the day, Neville scours the city, in search of the creatures, so that he can destroy them)...

...however, he finds out that there are apparently some people, who have been only partially afflicted by the disease, and he has been inadvertantly destroying them, as well; in that respect, he has also been toted as the legendary killer (...hence, the title of the book/movie), and these partially afflicted persons want him executed, as a result of his ghastly 'crimes' ...

...in realizing this situation, Neville attempts to communicate with the partially afflicted people, and hopefully, in convincing them to use his blood as a serum, tries to reverse the effect of the virus...

Before seeing the Will Smith version of this film, might I recommend that you check out the two previous movie versions of this story; they are 1964's "The Last Man on Earth" (...starring Vincent Price), and 1971's "The Omega Man" (...starring Charleton Heston)...

Point of trivial interest: Richard Matheson has had several other novels of his, transformed into feature films, including "The Shrinking Man" (...which became 1957's "The Incredible Shrinking Man", or if you like, 1981's "The Incredible Shrinking Woman", as well), "A Stir of Echoes" (...which, of course, was made as simply "Stir of Echoes", in 1999), "Hell House" (...which became 1973's "The Legend of Hell House"), "Bid Time Return" (...which became 1980's "Somewhere in Time"), and of course, 1998's "What Dreams May Come"...

If the movie is based on the novel at all, and it seems to be from the promos...

A huge natural disaster hits, and in the process, it releases a bacteria. Only one man--the main character--is immune to it. Everyone else has fallen sick from it, and in the process, become a vampiric sort of monster. Or so it seems.

The high points of the novel _I Am Legend_ were that 1) the story tried to explain the whole vampire thing in terms of science fiction, and 2) that it went into some detail about what it means to be the "last human" in a world where *everyone* else has become a monster already.

Because in the novel, the "vampires" consider the Last Human "the Legend", and the Monster Under the Bed. It's a bit of a role-reversal.

Of course, this may or may not be explored in the movie, but so far it seems to be a pretty faithful adaptation of the novel. The line from the promos, "...I am broadcasting on *all* AM frequencies...is anyone out there?" was taken *straight* from the novel *verbatim*, word for word.

But then again, it's also a Will Smith film too. We know what happened with _I, Robot_ as well. It's a risk.

So yeah, it's your call. ^_^ Hope I was helpful.

I want 2 see this movie really bad. If my answer doesn't help look at it's main website when you search i am legend , there's a very ( or at least I thought so) informative clip that should explain the plot better. Any way here's what I know: Will Smith plays a brilliant scientist who lives in NY. When a man made virus hits ,it mutates the infected and turns them into cannibals who can only survive in the dark(of course) . The disease takes everyone in NY ,possibly the world. Will is immune 2 the virus. He spends 3 yrs. hiding out in the city searching 4 food and faithfully sending out radio messages every day. He decides 2 try 2 come up w/ a cure 4 the illness by using his blood i.e whatever's in his blood that makes him immune.

EXCEPT Will smiths character.
He's on a search for survivors and has to fight off these monsters to find them.
Read the book by Richard Matheson

I haven't seen it, but its about this scientist, and he is the last person because of some man-made disease that affected everyone. Only he is immune to the disease, and the infected ppl come out at night as these sort of monsters and destroy everything, and while he is trying to find some cure for the disease, they are trying to kill him.

GO see the movie! Why would you want to know everything about it before you even see it? If you want to know more, watch an old movie called "The Omega Man". "I Am Legend" is a retread of that one.
