America is a huge country, so there's not as much violence as the media would have you think. Really, violent shootings and the like are hyped up by the media to sound far worse than they are. Also remember that the United States is large enough to compare with most of Europe, and there have been a number of violent crime incidents in various parts of Europe over time, just fewer in any one country.

We're overhyping security and prison, but not much in the ways of rehabilitation and taking care of those at risk. That's the biggest problem.

In a country of over 300 million people there are bound to be some dangerous nut jobs out there hellbent on killing them selves and others. It is what you called it, random violence. You really can't predict it, if you could it'd be called scheduled violence right? Anyways the only thing a responsible citizen can do about it is obtain, train and carry a legal handgun. If some one had a weapon at Virginia Tech or that mall earlier this week perhaps not so many people would have died. When the police get a call like that and they get on scene the first thing they do is secure the area so the perp can't escape. That process takes time, time when crazies are killing people. If a man or woman had a means of defending themselves then they could stop the shooter. Laws restricting legal handgun possession have led to us being unarmed by law and the criminals and crazies with the guns.

I don't think America is the most violent place.. but I think there are quite a few kids now who do more violence than a lot of adults and that's in schools, malls and colleges. I think it has a lot to do with society and how they put on the act that if you're not how the movie stars are, you're nothing.People follow these trends, and when they see someone less fortunate, they laugh and mock them. The kids become helpless and feel like they're nothing,I think that's when they turn against society and feel like they want to get all those people back.

Violence rarely occurs in the rural areas of the US. It's mainly the big cities that have crime problems. That guy who shot up the mall was an adult, he was 19.

I assume we have a larger country than you do, therefore naturally you will hear plenty of news about America. If we are eight times your size, obviously we have eight times as much of chance for a shooting like this to occur.

What country are you from? I love foreigners visiting the US Q&A and asking questions, I do the same sometimes.

I feel safer here than there. Where ever there is. We all know where here is. The USA. Land that I love stand beside her and yada yada yada. Thank You.

the television is terrible. they broadcast every little happening and every program demonstrates violence as being the big great thing.... you have to realize that everything the american united states does is not necesarilly right. and in the increasing hidden inflation, more people will become cheated and money will buy less, there will be more violence. until the government reestablishes the gold standard, brings it back down to 50 dollars an ounce. it only all will be corrected after a major recession,depression.... hang on!!!!

I don't know where you are from, but there a thousands of GOOD people here in the U.S. You hear about the assaults and shootings as we do also. But keep a focus on all the good things that happen here and the good, well meaning, generous people who are citizens here.

Do you have a "free press" that will deliver all news to you, good or bad, in your country.
