They will do various tasks around the facility, so a crew member might work the cash register one shift and be getting the food the next. Sometimes a crew member, associate, or employee will fall into a rut where they are put into the same place every time.

different companies call employees different things. some call employees ( non-managerial ) crew members, some call them associates. these are entry and non-entry level employees who have not been promoted to a higher level.
I have worked in retail for over 30 years and have seen all kinds of terms to describe the same job position.
