different companies call employees different things. some call employees ( non-managerial ) crew members, some call them associates. these are entry and non-entry level employees who have not been promoted to a higher level.
I have worked in retail for over 30 years and have seen all kinds of terms to describe the same job position.

It means there are a group of people who do the interchangeable jobs - maybe with a foreman (crew leader) if the model is followed in detail
