Much more than words at times. I have a very close friend, & we spend much time together being silent. We do not have to talk just to be comfortable, which is often the case with many people. There are different forms of silence just as words are used to convey different emotions. There is silence that yells I am hurt, or I am mad at you, another that speaks of depression & doom & gloom. But by far is the one that says I am at ease, as only old friends can be, I have dropped all pretense & I am just here with you, & it is enough. Blessings

For the last few hours or so, sleep.

Normally, it indicates introspection.

When it is directed at someone in particular it says hurt.

What it says to me is a loud waterfall that I can not hear others through once the silence begins to roar and all I hear are my own thoughts telling me something is a miss.

Philosophically, speaking silence tells you nothing and nothing is the opposite of being as in you do not exist, hence the silent treatment, a cruel invention people came up with to teach others that they can be alone in their lives. Parents taught it to children and children taught it to each other and the practice continues in cruelty and harsh reality. Some have even adapted it to allow them to let their infants cry themselves to sleep so as to teach the children object permanence, the concept that just because someone leaves you does not mean that they are not coming back. I don't subscribe to this theory.

At any rate, the answer is that your silence communicates your lack of interest in another or in what is going on. Forced silence can be explained with a simple story as to what you have been doing while you were away, but; unexplained silence simply leaves the impression that you think it is alright to leave the other person(s) in the dark. I can't say that is a very good feeling to give to someone you care for.

Very Few may be aware of the Power of Silence. And most would interpret Silence as Negative Response, Communication cut off. But silence of Words is no Silence unless it is relaxing the mind and body simultaneously. One may keep silent outwardly yet boiling with war of words internally.

My silence usually means one of the following things;
1). The first would be that I am listening to you and you have my full attention
2). The second could be that I am contemplating what I have been told.
3). The last thing that my silence would dictate is my loss for words at what I am being told and I am trying to gather my thoughts and decide how I can tactfully remove myself from the discussion until I have more time to give an adequate answer.
Note: (This has happened to me when someone starts to tell me that they have had a micro chip implanted in their tooth
from their dentist when they believed that they were getting a cavity filled)!

Many different things.
That I'm comfortable with a person, to sit in silence & not to need a running dialogue. (Very UN-Western.)
That I'm listening to the other.
That I've no wish to get into debate.
That all has been spoken.
& probably more. Isn't there a quote--silence is the herald of joy? Something like that. Most people seem to feel the need to fill silence. I find it very peaceful to be with someone whose presence is harmony, who can read the paper, or look at the lake, knowing I'm not demanding constant attention & yammering.

many things, but the most of all they say

1. I have ignorance
2. I have nothing to say
3. I'm still interpreting it and need time
4. I think what they said was either so astoundingly stupid or smart that I just can't take it in at the moment.

Here...means I don't have an answer or I'm thinking it through. Or I'm just not around.

Over here...I'm working on something, or too many thoughts getting in the way, or I'm taking a break from everyone around me...or maybe I'm just ridding myself of something.
