You might find what you described is more common that you think.
Go to South east Asia and see. I know that people in Thailand will dip raw (not quite ripe) apple, geen mangoes, guava into salt and sugar mixture (sometimes with fresh chillies added)
They do this with all sorts of fruits too.
I had that when I to lived there as a kid .

I grew up in the American S.W. [hot] before salt was considered bad. We salted everything. Fruit. Meat. Beer. Coffee. If we didn't have something to salt, we'd just lick the base of our thumb and suck on it.

Granysmith apples are the best.
Nice and tart add a little salt brings out the falvor and juiciness of the apple....

It is very delicious and I wouldn't have it any other way. Here are some foods that are not good with salt on them:
Donuts
Pies
Cakes
Brownies
Ice Cream
I know these are desserts, but you know I had to put them down.

hahaha.. um yes i have because those apples they serve in restaurants usually have salt in them cuz they don't want the apple to turn brown (salt is a preserative) try laying a cut apple fro a few minutes, it turns brown.. hahaha
oh well... i would'nt eat salted apples intentionally but if salt is already on it, then i guess.. what the heck!!
ahah
monroe
ps. don't try salt on PB&J.. bad experience...

Yeah, a little salt and lime juice. Good stuff.
Salt doesn't taste good in coffee.
