In a choice between the two, Avast is better.
I wouldn't even consider AVG. It's no longer even comparable to Avast or Avira. The reason AVG is so easy to use is because it never bothers you; it never bothers you because its detection rates are pathetic and it never finds anything to alert you about.
I have had automatic update problems with *Avira*, which is why I use and recommend Avast.
If Avira updated dependably for me I would use and recommend Avira; but if you can't trust your AV to update, it's too risky.

Avast is much better. AVG is heavily restricted. You aren't supposed to run it on more than one computer at home for example. It will expire and start nagging you to pay for it, unless you find where on their website is the new free version.
Definitely go with Avast or ClamWin instead of AVG, see below for more info (AOL ActiveVirusShield used to be the best free antivirus, but AOL dropped it):

As an AVG user for over a year now, I am very satisfied with it. I allow it to scan my computer each morning, but I do the updates on my own so it won't interfere while I'm in the middle of anything. If you want more than the free version, go for it. I haven't found it necessary.

Avast was slowing down my computer, so I switched to AVG. If you look on CNET, the most downloaded program of all is AVG.
But the very best is 5 hits of Advil. It knocks out any virus.

AVG is definitely the choice to go with. First it has a very small memory footprint. Second it doesn't slow the computer down when scanning and running in the background. Third it is updated pretty much every day. And lastly it supports pretty much every version of windows.
