I'm not pregnant or anything. I'm fifteen years old :)
But I'm writing (another) fictional story set in the Vietnam War era and can't decide on a character's name. She's currently living in northern New York but I haven't decided her original nationality or race or anything. She's about twenty-five.
I don't think she'll need a surname, but any ideas on that?

Do you prefer:
Hannah
Jana (very Spanish- pronounced "Hahn-uh")
Elisa
Adela
Josie
Hallie
Adenine
Adrielle
Sarah
Jessica (Jess)

Any other ideas? What names do people you know born around the fifties have?

Popular U.S. names from the mid-40's include:

Mary, Barbara, Susan, Nancy, Margaret, Linda, Carol, Patricia, Sharon, Judith, Betty, Carolyn, Judy, Shirley, Donna, Joyce, Kathleen, Dorothy.

Maria or Joan would be good, if you want something a bit less common but still in the right time-frame.

I think you need to be a bit more old fashioned. Anything with Mary ____ like Mary Anne, Mary Agnes, Mary Frances, etc. Then there are the bible names, Ruth, Elizabeth, etc. Then there are just the plain ones- Karen, Jane, Alice, Linda, etc. I'd bet you could do a search for the most common girls names for the years you're interested in. BTW, I'm from upstate NY and these are the names, based on people I know, that came to mind. Best of luck with your story!

Donna, Tina, Susan, or June sound like names from the fifties.

I would reccommend something fairly simple, like Hannah, and I would definitely stay away from Jana. I think, as a writer, you should choose a name that most of your readers will be able to relate to. --NOT something that half of America will mispronounce.

Jana is a lovely name, really, but I don't think you should use it.
