Though it may seem like an oxymoron, what the label is really saying is that you should not drive or operate machinery until you know how the pill affects you during waking hours. Sometimes the stronger sleeping pills have a residual effect of drowziness that lasts several hours after you wake up, and you could have an accident if you are still under the influence. Most sleeping pills contain narcotics. This warning is not limited to sleeping pills alone, however, since many prescription meds have a similar side effect.

Same reason coffee cups say caution product may be hot. People want to find any reason to sue. People will find any reason to say I didnt' know so that don't have to take the blame for anything that happens.

Because some people are stupid enough to take these pills and then drive or do other things they should not be doing under the influence of drugs.

Because some people are just plain dumb. Why do most packages of Christmas lights say "only for indoor or outdoor use?" and why does it say "do not turn upside down" on the bottom of some frozen foods?

Because there are people out there who are stupid enough to take them and then try to go out and drive and sue the manufacturer when they get into a wreck because they fell asleep at the wheel.

I've often wondered that myself. It's like saying-- Warning, this product may actually do what it's intended to do.
