How come shows (old ones particularly) take so long to get released on dvd and how come it takes even longer for the complete series to come out if they ever come out at all? (example is Perfect strangers sitcom which never came out and dynasty which only came out with first two seasons so far and I want the whole series now). Can anyone shed some light?

Sometimes it has to do with legal issues. A lot of older shows actually have to change their music soundtrack for DVDs, because it is too expensive or impossible to negotiate DVD rights for the original songs. Other shows do go for the original music, and it takes time to negotiate new deals (TV shows nowadays know that they have to plan for DVD releases).

Another possibility is that they drag out the DVD releases to make the most money. Seinfeld could have been released all at once, but instead it seems like they release one season a year. This way collectors and fans buy season by season, which is more expensive than buying a box set containing every season.

And for shows like Perfect Strangers, the production companies probably feel like there isn't enough demand for it. Most sitcoms like this are popular for a couple years, then get forgotten by most people. It seems like every show does come out on DVD eventually, but with a 20 year old show there isn't exactly a ruch to get the show out there again.

money. By releasing them slowly, it ensures them content to have so they can release them one by one to get maximum exposure. Plus, it does take some time to convert the old film/VHS shows to a modern format, clean them up editing wise, and make it a DVD presentation.

Its the same thing for movies. Movie comes out in theaters, you pop $10 to see it. It comes on 8-12 months later on DVD with extra features for another $30. So you see it and buy it, maximum money for the production company.
