It sounds like he is very defensive. Either because he is in a bad mood or because he is a bad instructor/teacher/professor and doesn't know the answer so he tries to embarrass or divert the person so as not to have to answer the question.

Not to mention the fact that he sounds very unprofessional if he gets mad in class due to a simple question.

Addition: Are you talking about a psychological projection where he projects his own feelings of anger about his inadequacy onto his classroom or the person who asked the question? A defense mechanism? Denial of his own inadequacies? Any of these sound like what you're looking for?

I wouldn't be at all surprised if this professor has been criticised by his superior as being inflexible in his teaching methods. That would explain the attitude about questions like this. Wherever possible, I would just follow his instructions to the letter. And, if you have to ask a question to which you get a curt response, ignore it. I don't think it's about you.

Your professor is immature and feels threatened (however old he may be). Quite possibly he never thought/didn't know about method Y and you inadvertently made him feel inferior or stupid. Watch out -- he could downgrade you just to get even.

Well this behavior is typical of Narcissists - but does not necessarily mean he is one. It is just one of the typical features - that they are the only ones who are right and just cannot accept the opinions of others.

If it is just the term you want, he is being inflexible.
