The bass clarinet sounds a full octave lower than the soprano clarinet and has a range comparable to the baritone sax.

The EEb contra-alto and BBb contrabass clarinets are even lower and with the Bass Sax (rare) and Contrabassoon (rare) are the lowest woodwinds in the band.

The baritone sax and bass clarinet are the "tuba" of the woodwind family. The contrabass instruments (contra clarinets, bass sax, contrabassoon) really have no equal amongst the brass family.

I really like playing big clarinets, I always have. They are incredibly versatile instruments and add a wondrous tone to any ensemble. Unlike what many people think (even band directors), they don't get easier to play just because they are bigger. These instruments can be more challenging than the soprano and require regular practice.

Really good players are not common so if you can develop quality on the bass clarinet then you will be a sought after musician. It's used in all sorts of ensembles (orchestra, band, jazz, musicals, film, ....) and a lot of fun.

It's a lot lower than the normal clarinet but 1 million times as fun! I play it and the low notes sound so cool! Also I always like to tease my mates who play clarinet that I can play lower... although they always just come back with "Well I can play higher!" I really think you should play it. It is the world's best ever instrument and not enough people play it.

There's not that much learning to do. It's kind of the same... The only thing that kind of changes is the parts. bass clarinet is more bass line while clarinet is more melody so when playing clarinet your finger speed will need to increase, but that's about it
