I'm a sophmore at college applying to the 2 year business school program for junior and senior year. The application requires a resume. I have job experience i can list on it, but i don't have a really high GPA(3.0 but going up after this semester), or any relevant school-related activities or achievements.

I'm a musician and a lot of my time and energy is devoted to music, but how do i include that? If i could write a small paragraph explaining i want to go into music business or how my job over the last 2 summers made me realize i want to do learn business or some bullshit like that...my resume might stand out. But the way it is now, my resume doesn't stand out above average in any way.

My friends who are applying to the school said the school is looking for a really basic simple resume though...so i don't know what to do. There's no way to include anything personal, just GPA and resume and classes basically.

ps i'm not trying to make it really long or anything even if i add some type of paragraph it'll still be 1 page. I mean i really got almost nothing to put on it but resume and job, so if i don't make it known that i have other things in life(music), i look like some loser. hell i wouldn't respect myself if academics was my main focus and i still had a 3.0, so why should someone i don't even know respect that and accept me to their school?

You can always include your job in a resume, which may give them the idea that you became interested because of your work. You can also put a line at the bottom of your resume in which you put other skills, and include your music along with any other accomplishments and information like computer programs, languages, etc.

Your friends are right, send in a basic simple resume. I have had the misfortune to read countless long winded resumes full of fluff. Less is more when witting resumes. That is the sign of a well organized mind. I had one guy send me a six page resume, listing all the magazines he subscribed to, and TV programs he watched !!! I usually don't have all day to review a mountain of resumes, what jumps out at me is a simple resume on regular paper.

It is always good to include a cover letter with your resume. A cover letter is an introduction to your resume. It also allows you to be a bit more personal with the employer rather than just sending your resume by itself. Its always a good idea to open up with a cover letter. Good luck
