i wanted to give her Twilight as a present because it's exciting and it's not that girly like Meg Cabot's books (although i do like her books). I just dont think his dad would approve of such books. do you know any other books?

At that age, I really liked "Little Women." It's a classic and I think my mom read it to me, but it's one of my favorite childhood books.

I also liked "The Secret Garden."

Both are classics that all 11 year olds should read at some point.

I read The Outsiders, That Was Then This Is Now, Rumble Fish and Tex when I was 11. Outstanding books. Also I recommend The Secret Garden, all the Narnia series, The Hobbit, any Paula Danziger books, Dreams of Victory by Ellen Conford, Secrets of the Shopping Mall by Richard Peck, and Little Women.

Twilight would be perfect. My 10 year old cousin is reading the series and her mom is super over protective about what she reads. Anyway, The City of Ember and The People of Sparks is a good book for that age.

The Oak Inside the Acorn by Max Lucado. The book is about how there is something in all of us that makes us stronger.

Or another good one is Oh the Places You'll Go by Dr. Seuss

I loved A Tree Grows in Brooklyn when I was that age.

Also: The Chronicles of Narnia (CS Lewis) and The Dark is Rising (Susan Cooper)

I recomend getting Bone by Jeff Smith. Don't go for the giant 700 page omnibus though. Instead, just buy her the first book in the series (in color). If you want to spend more, buy the second one also.

It's not girly and it's entertaining for people of any age and gender.

EDIT:
the books in the Redwall series by Brian Jaques. they're amazing

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. An oldie but a goodie, it's a must-read for sixth graders, even girls. The sequel, That Was Then, This Is Now also is excellent.
