A pay phone is exactly that. A public phone requiring coins in order to make a connection. Before cell phones they were everywhere, now you only see them in poor neighborhoods or transportation hubs.

in bygone ages they used to be on the street they were just a handset with the cable cut off if you could find one with cable still attatched you put money in and spoke
