Probably low 20's. We're all volunteer now, by the way.

And the Vietnam 19 thing is a myth:

"Myth: The common belief is the average age of an infantryman fighting in Vietnam was 19.

Fact: Assuming KIAs accurately represented age groups serving in Vietnam , the average age of an infantryman (MOS 11B) serving in Vietnam to be 19 years old is a myth, it is actually 22. None of the enlisted grades have an average age of less than 20. The average man who fought in World War II was 26 years of age."

I think what you may be confusing is the average age of draftees in Vietnam and WWII and comparing that to the average age of the Army as a whole. The reason for the difference in draftee age between WWII and Vietnam was the rules of the actual draft. In WWII they drafted across a wider age range then they did in Vietnam. This is based on how many people are eligible to serve against the needs of the military to fight the war. WWII needed many more draftees then Vietnam, so they recruited across a larger age range to meet the requirement. I cant find the source right now, but I read about a year ago that the average age of a Basic Trainee for the Army is about 22. Average age for the Army as a whole was about 26. Average age for a Marine recruit was about 20. The thing I read did not have the Air Force or Navy averages.

Most people join right out of high school so about 19 is probably still the same. In WWII there was a draft so they had a big range of age groups in the military going in for the first time.
