Yes. However, it depends on how close to the surface you are.

Water molecules are much closer together than are air molecules. So, sound waves collide more quickly in water then they do in air and sound, therefore, travels faster in water then in air.

However, there is so much resistance to the molecules moving, that the sound won't go very far. So, if you are close to the surface, you can hear someone shouting to you. But, if you are a foot or more underwater, you can't.

Yes. Never went swimming? It sounds muffled, but you can hear. Sound does travel underwater, but a sound started underwater probably travels farther than one that has to break the barrier... Though I'd bet something like a dolphin or whale would hear something very loud going on above... like an atomic bomb.

if the ur underwater and the person is right on top of u screaming then yes

but if ur like on one side of the pool and the person who is on top of the water is on the other side of the pool then no

Yes of course you can...you might not understand what they are saying but you can hear them shouting.

yes you can but the person underwater just hears muffled noises. its hard to make out what they are saying.

I can but it's muffled. I can hear noises but can't really understand what exactly the person is saying.
