Walter Payton is the best...second best is Jim Brown.

there is no running back that has ever played that was more agile than Barry Sanders
on the other hand no running back was ever tougher than Larry Csonka
but as far as all around back I'd have to say Walter Payton
there weren't too many backs that could finish a run like him.
Another factor for Sanders was that no running back in history was as much fun to watch

3.Barry Sanders
4.Emmitt Smith

I'm a cowboys fan and I put sanders b4 smith because if he hadn't retired.. Emmitt wouldn't have that record right now...

I'd like to say Sweetness, since he played across the street when he was in college and I was in medical school, but I have to say Jim Brown, who defined what the modern running back should be.
