With fast food, a lot of the food is premade, so it's cheaper, and they're able to get your food ready much more quickly. In a true fast food place, you'll just order at the counter and pay up front. Then you wait a minute or two, and then they'll have your food ready and you just pick it up at the counter. Some places are a little more formal, and they might give you a number and let you seat yourself, and then someone will come and drop the food off at your table (these kinds of places are often called "fast casual" rather than fast food). Both fast food and fast casual places typically have drink stations out in the restaurant so that customers can just get their own drinks.
But a regular restaurant has full service. Meaning that you basically don't do anything yourself. A host/hostess will seat you at a certain table, and then a server will come and take your drink orders, bring the drinks to you, and then take the rest of your order and bring your food out. And they keep checking on you periodically to make sure everything is ok and to see if you need drink refills. Then you pay at the end when they bring your check.

the basic def is that fast food joints are an easy place to go to get some quick easy food and a proper restaurant is a place where the food takes a bit longer, a bit more expensive but when you go its a nice place to sit, chat and enjoy your company.
one wierd thing though is that most think that fast food joints are way less healthy. in truth they are equally unhealthy and sometimes, when you get the whole meal, a normal restaurant is even less healthy! not to mention if you want to know that cals and stuff going into your food in a fast food joint you can find them there or go on the website or something. as for real restaurants it's next to impossible to find that info!
bet you didn't see that one coming! lol! just make sure you don't eat at either alot, okay? =D

The simple answer would be, "Fast food restaurants make your food quick. 'Regular' restaurants take longer to make your food." However, I'm not known for brevity. ;)
Fast food restaurants serve your food quickly for little money and you don't have to worry about cleaning up afterwards - even if you bring the food home. Since everything is packed up in paper boxes, it's easy enough to throw it all away once you're done. Plus, you don't expect much in the way of ambiance at a fast food restaurant. Plastic chairs, sticky tile floors, shiny formica-topped tables... that's about it. Nor do you expect a server to come by and bring you your food and drinks.
"Regular" restaurants provide you with the ease of being able to sit down and have someone wait on you. You order your food and drinks and they're brought to you. You're eating off of ceramic (or, in some cases, glass) plates with metal silverware and drinking out of glass glasses . When you're done, you don't have to worry about washing the dishes - unless you bring your leftovers home with you and decide to reheat it on a plate or in a bowl.
In terms of the caloric value of fast food restaurants versus "regular" restaurants, there really isn't much difference. Being a chef and having worked in a number of restaurants, I have taken the time to figure out the caloric value of some of the items I've made at various restaurants in the past. Trust me when I say you really don't want to know. The big difference, however (and the reason why you don't necessarily get fat from eating at "regular" restaurants), is that it's more financially feasible to eat at fast food joints on a regular basis. Eating at a "regular" restaurant tends to cost more - anywhere from $15 per person and up, depending on the type of restaurant.
As an added side note, the reason I keep using "regular" instead of simply... regular... is that there are a wide variety of said "regular" restaurants. On one end of the spectrum, you have your casual dining, like Denny's and Perkins. On the other end, you have places with a white tablecloth, candles and waiters wearing a shirt and tie.
There are definitely more differences; however, these are the most common and well noticed.

Regular restaurants use actual food, where as fast food restaurants use food that comes out of bags that they add water to. I would go with regular restaurants or cooking myself.

Fast food is usually counter service. You order, you pay, they give you the food, then you find a table. Also, they food is generally prepared quicker.
A regular restaraunt will sit you down and a server will come and take your order, bring you coffee and deliver your food. It's a more relaxed atmosphere and usually more comfortable. Generally the food is better, but more expensive than fast food.

Price and type of food.
Not the health of the food. They've done studies that show "Casual dining resturants" like Applebees I guess have just as many calories and just as much fat as McDonalds.
Plus it's nice to be able to sit down at a table and have somebody take my order.

supposedly they are fast/ have food ready and waiting not any more?!! only thing i notice is they usaully have your food in under 8 minutes ,when say at Denny's maybe 15 minutes and more fresh tasting...a regular resturant has more choice too! not just burgers and such.
things like dessert pies(real) cake and veggies with meal, not just salads premade! some real resturants also serve beer, and wine too!
