Water is heated at the Equator causing it to rise,it is cooled at the poles causing it to sink ,,causing a circular motion

Ocean currents are produced from the forces acting on the water arising out of wind, temperature, gravity of moon, earth's rotation and salinity differences. The direction and depth depends upon the depth contours ,the shoreline and other currents.
Surface ocean currents are wind driven and have clockwise movement in Northern Hemisphere. They are affected by seasons to some extent and move accordingly.
Deep ocean currents are driven by density and temperature gradients.
The very important(fundamental) causes for the formation of ocean currents are solar energy, winds and gravity.

The primary source of currents comes from the gravitational pull of the Moon. As the world revolves, water keeps flowing toward the pull of the Moon, causing the tides. These are, in turn, influenced by the terrain of the coastlines, the sea floor, and so on.

Other things that cause or influence ocean currents are tectonic activities. Earthquakes and undersea volcanoes are the main things. Their effects on ocean currents are usually temporary, however.

I tihnk that it is mainly caused by the moon, or that's what I have always thought. Here is something I found on a site:

The horizontal and vertical circulation of ocean waters are called currents. Major causes of ocean currents include wind friction, gravity, and variation in water density in different parts of the ocean.

Much of the info was released in November. "Our study confirms many changes seen in upper Arctic Ocean circulation in the 1990s were mostly decadal in nature, rather than trends caused by global warming," said Morison.

primarily differences in density, either because of temperature differences or because of salinity differences. Tides, wind, and even fresh water inputs also cause current activity.
