I've heard it pronounced both ways. Mainly res-pit as in elder care and respite in the text of rest and relaxtion. Are they 2 different words or the same pronounced depending on where you grew up? We, Southerners are famous for language skills.

The proper way to pronounce is res-pit. No alternatives are found in the dictionary.

My daughter does res pit care for some elderly people.

I used to work as a hospice nurse and we said res pit.

Respite here in Uk, I've never heard it pronounced any other way, looks like it maybe one of those "potato" or "patato" things

Edit...just went to check the online dictionary to hear it after what granny said it made me curious...it sounded like "resput" to me ...lol....things we do eh...lol

I never used the word, but the dictionary pronounces it this way. I looked it up and discovered that they is a sound tool that pronounces the word for you!
