What a wonderful city! It is expensive, as are most major cities, but if you can manage a youth hostel or a bed -sit you could manage with about $100 a day. You can find inexpensive foods at snack shops and see a lot of the city for less than nothing when you stay in the centrum, so you can walk.

Museums are not as pricey as you would think. Just walking through the main city areas including the trade and flower markets are tons of fun. Splurge on a canal ride to see bridges and architecture. If you enjoy beer you can still have a lovely afternoon and maybe chat with some locals who will offer suggestions for good visits. My husband is Dutch and when I lived over there the people were very nice and a lot of fun.

The Netherlands are beautiful and full of history so don't let the expense deter you from enjoying the sites. Heb en goode tijd!

It all depends on what you plan to do there.
I have been there. I was in the Army at the time. I was stationed in Germany and took an extended weekend and went there for vacation. I had so much fun for a few days.
Try going to a travel agency to get the best rate on every thing.
The drinking age there is 16! My friends and I sat next to a local Dutch girl who was 16 in the bar. Marijuana is legal there to. Most people are fluent in English and they usually speak at least One other language, usually German. The official language there is Dutch. Dutch sounds a lot like German. I can understand and speak a little bit of German, but not Dutch. So when I walked by people who were talking, I could tell when they were speaking Dutch, because it sounds like German, but I did not understand any thing they were saying.
Like I said earlier, I was in the military at the time, so I could not smoke any weed or go to the Red Light District (That is where you can legally buy a prostitute). I could not do that stuff, because, if I got caught, I would have been in a lot of trouble with the US Army.
The best thing I did get to do there though, was go to the Heineken brewery.
Over all, I had a blast there and did not spend much money at all- Under $500. Of course, my trip was planned and organized by the Army MWR program. That was why I got to go there so cheep. Also, it was just a short bus ride for me to get there. You will probably have to fly, which will cost more.

Well as an Amsterdammer, i can tell you that it is pretty expensive here.

A chicken sandwich : 3 Euros
A cup of tea : 2 Euros
Kaassouffle(something like a cheese crocket) from snack machine : 2.20 Euros
Public transportation ticket for 7 rides: 6.80 Euros
Public Toilet : 30 Euro Cents
A bed in a 8 person dormitory room for 1 night: 25 Euros.
A double room in a decent hotel : 130 Euros
Tuktuk ride: 3 euros per person
Taxi ride: Just forget about it
A pack of cigarattes: 4-5 Euros
20 minutes of erotic session in Red Light District : 50 Euros

If you will sleep in a dormitory, and do hardcore budget travelling , lets say 50 Euros a day would be OK.

So far you did get good information, I'll add a few links and addresses.
This is a good site with much information, each with a link to the website of the place if they have one:
http://www.amsterdam.info/
They have a page on museums, shopping, sights and so on.
And also a map:
http://www.amsterdam.info/map/

Areas to look for cheaper but fun places to eat, Zeedijk, between Nieuwmarkt and the central station, many ethnic eateries, often modest in price.
Around Leidseplein, the side streets, and their side streets again, have many restaurants.

Indonesian/Chinese is always popular, rijsttafel a good choice, specially if they do a 'buffet' where you can chose out of many different dishes.
Pannekoeken, pancakes, are a tradition and may make a good lunch (although I would also make a dinner out of them.)

Enjoy your stay.
