Odoban! You buy it at Sam's. It is also a disinfectant. You put it into your wash along with detergent. It takes the smell out of anything. I use it with sheets, clothes, esp. the clothes for my kids. Once you try it, you'll love it!

If your towels are already musty, bleach and hot water should take care of it. If they are colored towels, bleach is no good. Instead, add a cup of ammonia in the wash water. As you probably know, NEVER mix ammonia and bleach because the fumes can be fatal. Borax is definitely good at getting rid of odors, but if there is mildew in the towles, you have to get rid of it because it's a living organism that will keep multiplying in damp conditions.

Once your towels smell good aain, keep them that way by spreading them out to dry. Hanging on a hook, a towel will be too bunched up to dry. Have enough towel bars so air can circulate behind each towel.

My mom lives in a super damp climate, and she puts towels in the dryer after each use. That's a bit extreme, but it works.

If you are putting them away before they are completely dry, that could account for the musty smell. Try re-washing with sufficient laundry powder and all fabric bleach or instead of the bleach, use about 1/4 cup white vinegar before the final rinse. If you have an outside clothes line, after re-washing, let them dry in the sun, that also gives a nice, clean smell. Good luck!!

Once they get the "funk" no amount of bleaching or odor removal products will permanetly keep the funk away. The stink will return as soon as the cloth gets wet again. Bummer! The towels may be history. I've soaked in bleach, hydrogen peroxide, washed in baking soda and used odor removing chemicals......the funk returns.

The key is to wash OFTEN, dry completely.

Borax (found in the laundry aisle at the market) is a great, non-toxic laundry additive that gets rid of a lot of bad clothing smells (even cat urine!).
Use it with your detergent, and also bleach. This will usually kill bad smells. You can use a lot of Borax in each load, it won't damage clothes, or cause itchy skin like detergent might.

I get that too. (they sit and wait in the dirty pile too long, alas). I put them in the soak cycle with bleach for a while. Then I dry them hot with a nice, soft fabic sheet.Seems to work well for me.
