Historic Mongolia (the region not the state) is divided between the Republic of Mongolia and Inner Mongolia. Inner Mongolia is part of China but colonisation means that around 80% of the population of Inner Mongolia province are ethnic-Han. But most ethnic-Mongols actually live in China (about 6 million with around 2.7 million in the Republic of Mongolia itself.

The Mongols initially moved west out of Asia to the edge of Europe and south to the east edge of the Mediterranean. Once that area of the world had been stabilized as part of a Mongol empire, the leaders looked back to China. After a failed attempt China was finally overrun and added to the empire. I believe it was Kubla Khan who became the first really 'Chinese' Mongol Khan, as he ruled in China like a Chinese Emperor. As I recall, it was also Kubla Khan who tried to invade Japan, but had his fleet destroyed/dispersed by the Kamikaze (a well-timed and therefore obviously heaven-sent typhoon). Anyway, the Mongols in China became just one of the many Chinese dynasties (can't recall which one off the top of my head). I don't know when they were replaced as rulers, although I vaguely remember that a warlord period came after as the country broke up into minor kingdoms for a while. The Mongols in Mongolia retained their traditional culture although the empire shrank back down and mostly vanished (although it still lives on in the remnants of the vast trade routes and displaced tribal descendants that stayed in place).
