The purpose of Facebook is for its owners to make money.

They do this by selling advertising to people and companies who want people to see their advertisements. In order to encourage people to want to see the site (and its advertisements), Facebook allows users to input personal information for the purposes of social networking. So the social networking users are actually the product, in a sense, not the customer.

They also make money by selling some things to users, such as some kinds of ads and gifts.
